The Youngs of Port Elizabeth – Breakwater
John S Young was a member of the Port Elizabeth Harbour Board.
He was actively involved in the efforts to build the breakwater and the Charl Malan Quay, which enabled ships to dock safely, protected from the storms for which Algoa Bay is well known. The heartbreaking struggle over decades to achieve a protected harbour for Algoa Bay – the obstructive face of the Union government, always the two steps forward and one step back – is too tortuous to record here.
Until the breakwater was built, passengers had to be transferred by basket from the decks of ships standing out in the Bay, into lighters.
